Form Cues

  1. 1

Start standing with the barbell in a double overhand grip, arms outside hips.

  2. 2

Soft knee bend — maintain this angle throughout; do not squat the weight down.

  3. 3

Hinge at the hips, pushing them back as the bar travels down your thighs.

  4. 4

Keep the bar in contact with your body throughout the movement.

  5. 5

Lower until you feel a strong hamstring stretch — typically mid-shin.

  6. 6

Drive hips forward powerfully to return to standing, squeezing glutes at lockout.

Common Mistakes

  • Rounding the lower back — brace harder and reduce weight.

  • Bending the knees too much — keep them slightly bent and fixed.

  • Bar drifting away from the legs.

  • Hyperextending at lockout — stand tall without leaning back.

Equipment Variations

  • Dumbbell RDL — easier to set up, good for beginners.

  • Single-leg RDL — unilateral balance challenge.

  • Trap bar RDL — more upright torso.

  • Nordic hamstring curl — eccentric-focused hamstring alternative.
